Vadakkumthala is one among the early Christian settlements from Quilon. Vadakkumthala formed part of Kovilthottam parish till 1679 when a Church was put up in the area and was made a separate parish. Before 1679, the Christians in the area worshipped at the Church at Pandarathuruthu. In 1905, a beautiful Church was built here which gave way for a new Church blessed in 1994. A Lower Primary School was established here in 1916. A convent of Missionary Sisters of St. Therese serve the people bestowing spiritual benefits.
