According to ecclesiastical tradition the first church at Port Kollam Parish in the Latin Catholic Diocese of Quilon established by St. Thomas the Apostle. A sea port of great repute existed in Kollam and proximity of this parish to the Port Kollam. Traders from Europe and China had frequented this port. Besides the Persian missionaries named Mar Sappor and Mar Prot, Christian missionaries and bishops from Europe had also visited and preached the word of God. St. Francis Xavier’s preaching and healings of sick and works miracle had attracted thousands to the Christian faith.
The first church established by the Apostle St. Thomas is believed to have been devoured by the wrathful waves of the Arabian Sea. The foundation stone of the present church was blessed in 1986 by His Holiness Pope John Paul II of revered memory. The church was blessed in 1993 by the then Bishop of Quilon Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph. G. Fernandez. There are 3557 people in the parish. Besides the church there are two institutions in the parish: an Upper Primary School and a convent of Franciscan Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation.
